Ciara, the beauty of not knowing is that it opens doors only the brave dare to walk through. Keep trusting your instincts—they’ve already led you somewhere incredible
Such a relatable read! I'm 28 and I quit my job earlier this year - I'd always worked in the same industry since graduating university, but it wasn't until something big happened in my life earlier this year that I realised my career wasn't making me happy and really... I could just quit. I have NO idea what I'll do next, but as you say, I'm trying to lean into the endless opportunities that gives me instead of panicking!
Being made to feel that we must know what we want to do from a young age is so wrong. I also think it's normal to change up our careers far later into life than we both are right now! We have the freedom to try what we want, when we want. You've got this 🫶🏻 (I'll have to check out more of your writing!)
Ah Harriet thank you for your wonderful comment and thank you for sharing your personal experience <3 Yes it sometimes feels like you can't just quit, but that option is always there it's just taking that brave step. Well done for quitting! It should be celebrated I think because it is a very hard thing to do. I'll check out your writing too now! <3
No worries at all, it's so lovely to read other people's words and feel that they resonate with my own situation! Couldn't agree more with what you say, it's all about taking that unknown leap. Thank you so much! Onwards and upwards 🫶🏻
Hi Ciara <3 this was just a gorgeous (and extremely relatable!!) read. Thank you so much for the mention of roaring twenties? in the article, that truly means the world. Remember by putting yourself out there and sharing your story you already ARE the journalist you've always wanted to be!! Love how real and vulnerable you were in this post, and your Kingfisher sighting gave me literal chills. Can't wait to see what you write next. All my love, Char x
Thank you Liv for your comment! I'm glad you have found yourself in this piece as I wanted this piece to be something people could relate to, to realise that you're not alone <3
Love this post. In a similar vein, I left a very cushty work job a few years ago to take on something objectively more scary and it was this quote which did it for me - “a ship at harbour is safe but that’s not what a ship is for”. ⛴️
Really lovely post. Leaving something you know is scary but you are never 👏🏻 too 👏🏻 late 👏🏻 to do something entirely different - good for you.
Ah thank you for your comment Katie! I need to read your piece on deleting Instagram! I deleted my Instagram a few years ago now so I'm excited to read your thoughts on it! That quote really makes you think doesn't it!? Thank you for sharing your experience with me and thank you for your support 💓
I think you were really brave by deciding to go on another career path, that takes a lot of courage! I'm sure you'll find something you'll love soon! ❤️ As you know, I'm still looking for a job and it's been an exhausting and frustrating experience, but I'm positive that I'll find something soon (hopefully). Thank you so much for recommending my post! ❤️💌
I'm glad it did! I definitely felt a sense of relief when I found your Substack and learned that you are in a similar position to me. It made me feel like I'm not alone and that's okay. Thank you for the support Carlota <3 I am sending you all of the luck in hopes that you will find something just for you soon too! 🤍
I've been waiting for this piece since you mentioned it on Notes, I had to read it IMMEDIATELY. Can safely say that I relate to every single word.
I think leaving your job is an incredibly brave thing to do, and having the confidence to act on your instincts just shows how in tune you are with yourself. I think a lot of us stay in positions we hate because we're not sure there's another way to go, but there's always something else. I haven't finished listening to it yet but on my drive to work this morning I listened to the new episode of How to Fail with Ella Purnell and she was talking about how she had to work really hard to create a life she wanted rather than be passive, and reading this reminded me of that.
Also - totally understand your pain of all the jobs being called "Entry Level" and then requiring 5 years experience in a related field. Does that not defeat the objective?! Deffo keep having faith in yourself Ciara, if your writing is anything to go by I'm sure you'll find your feet 🫶🏻
Ella thank you so much! I'm glad you feel that you can relate to this 🤍 Yes that is very true about staying in a position because we're not too sure what to do next. That was me for the beginning of this journey. When I started having my doubts I also felt incredibly fearful of what to do if I left so I stayed a bit longer hoping it would get better. But I knew if I stayed I would just continue having doubts and end up pursuing something I didn't actually want to do. Sounds like a nightmare to me! I thought it's better to rip the plaster off and leave rather than make it worse by staying. Ooo I'll check out 'how to fail' today, I feel like I remember you speaking about it before on your Substack? Thank you for your moral support Ella! <3
I'm 29 and just quit my job as a corporate lawyer after studying and working for a total of 9 years, I realised that overtime your interests change and that's totally OK. I heard this quote the other day "if the path before you is clear, you're probably on someone else's", enjoy the uncertainty :)
Thank you Jabria! Glad to hear you feel the same way! It seems to be a struggle for a lot of people coming to the end of university. I wish you the best of luck and what is yours will find you <3
